So, you play the English Horn? If so, you probably share my frustration that there are few band pieces, except for a few solo parts, that include a part for your instrument. So you probably end up playing oboe most of the time.
Especially when a piece only has one oboe part, I've felt like it's a shame not to have an English Horn part. So I've taken it upon myself to sit down with the conductor's scores and create a few for parts we've played in our band.
Now, so that you won't have to do the same, I'm posting here my 'masterpieces'... in easy-to-print PDF format. If my concert band happens to have played a piece that you are playing, you'll be able to just download and print out your part, and then it will sound just right!
There is no profit to be made here, no fees to pay, no real market stolen. These parts will be of little use to anyone who hasn't already obtained a full copy of the piece. But hopefully I will have done my little part to promoting the use and enjoyment of this wonderful, versatile, and often neglected member of the double reed section, which I believe adds a beautiful warmth to the woodwind section of a concert band.

Tips on writing a part for English Horn:
- The parts of the score that you will likely base your English Horn part on are: the clarinets, the french horn, the oboe, the alto saxophone, and the second trumpet.
- Remember that the oboe often doubles the flute (often an octave lower). Sometimes this will be too high for the English Horn, and your part will differ quite a bit from the oboe.
- Remember that the alto sax and french horn often play in passages meant for brass instruments. The best time for the English Horn to double them is usually when they are doing something different from the trombones.
- In staccato bit pieces or chorale passages, you can often copy the oboe part, but look at the chord and pick the next note lower than the oboe in the chord for your part.
- When the oboe is doubling the first trumpet, the English Horn can double the second trumpet.
- Like the saxophones, the English Horn can add a clarity and focus to the sound of french horn melodic passages.
- Don't be afraid to use the full range of the instrument, and include parts in many styles. The English Horn is good for a lot more than just melancholy melodies!
